To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security by what percentage expenditure on social security has increased in real terms since 1979.

Expenditure on the social security programme in Great Britain has increased by 33 per cent. in real terms between 1978–79 and 1988–89. This percentage increase reflects the latest estimated outturn for the current financial year announced in the Chancellor of the Exchequer's autumn statement on 1 November 1988.
