HC Deb 14 November 1988 vol 140 cc467-8W
Mr. Leighton

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many employees of the British Transport police were made redundant consequent upon the privatisation of Sealink.

Mr. Portillo

None.

Mr. Leighton

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has as to when the communications programme will be completed to allow British Transport police to deploy officers underground.

Mr. Portillo

The British Transport police already deploy officers throughout the London Underground system, but the improvements to communications currently under way will increase their effectiveness below the ground. The installation of leaky-feeder cable equipment to allow the use of radios at 42 key deep-level stations will be completed by February next year. The full radio strategy extending the use of leaky-feeder facilities to other stations and allowing police radios to operate in running tunnels will be in place by 1993.
