HC Deb 11 November 1988 vol 140 c362W
Mr. Faulds

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what examination he is making of the problems of accidents arising from wheels coming loose or falling off lorries or buses with twinned coned fixed wheels; and if he intends to introduce regulations to require the adoption of flat nuts with coned washers.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

Wheel security on commercial vehicles has been the subject of recent research by the Motor Industry Research Association, sponsored by the Institute of Road Transport Engineers and the Department of Trade and Industry. The Department and the British Standards Institute expect to receive the full research reports shortly. These will be carefully considered to see whether any changes are needed in the current British standard and regulations.
