To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the number of prisoners being held in prisons in England and Wales who were infected with the HIV virus on 31 October.

On 31 October 1988 the prison population of England and Wales included 49 inmates reported as having been identified as HIV antibody positive. Two hundred and three such cases had been reported since central monitoring began in March 1985.
