HC Deb 11 November 1988 vol 140 cc347-8W
Mr. Andrew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will make a statement on the payment of income support in respect of people in board and lodging, residential care and hostel accommodation.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

From April 1989, people in ordinary board and lodging accommodation will be eligible to claim housing benefit for help with their accommodation costs. On payments to people in hostel accommodation, I refer the hon. Member to my hon. Friend's reply to my hon. Friend the Member for St. Ives (Mr. Harris) on 27 October at column337.

The present arrangements to pay income support to people in residential care and nursing homes will continue from April 1989. The longer term future of the funding of people in residential care is being considered by the Government in the context of Sir Roy Griffiths' report on community care.
