HC Deb 11 November 1988 vol 140 cc322-3W
Sir Michael McNair-Wilson

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will state the reasons why AWE Aldermaston was put on alert and warning sirens sounded on 8 November during the morning; whether the warning related to a leak of radioactivity; and whether he will make a statement.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

I can confirm that an automatic alarm system triggered falsely at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston on Tuesday 8 November. The work force's entry to the area was delayed until it was clear that it was safe. This was the same alarm that triggered falsely on Friday 28 October. On neither occasion was there any leak of radiation.
