HC Deb 10 November 1988 vol 140 cc246-7W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what responsibilities he has for tourism in Wales; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

Our responsibilities and major objectives are intended to encourage tourism as part of our wider aim to stimulate economic activity in Wales. Tourism is a major provider of jobs and can make a significant contribution to maintaining the level of economic activity in areas traditionally dependent on tourism and broadening the economic base of less-developed areas. The major direct instrument of Government policy is the Wales tourist board acting in conjunction with other statutory bodies through the various instruments of Government policy. We are particularly concerned to ensure the promotion of a healthy private sector tourist industry on which the future prosperity of many parts of Wales depends.
