To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster how many new businesses have been set up in Derbyshire since 1983.

The latest available estimate provided by the Department of Employment is that between the end of 1983 and the end of 1986 there were about 7,400 new businesses first registered for VAT in Derbyshire. The increase in the total numbers of businesses registered over this period was 4 per cent.
