National average accident rates are calculated annually for broad categories of roads. The 1987 rates for A class roads (both single and dual carriageway) were:
Accident rate Built-up with 40 mph speed limit 1.16 Non-built-up 0.34 All types 0.69 The A36 at West Wellow is a single carriageway with a 50 mph speed limit. National average accident rates for this type of road have not been calculated. Our agent authority consider that a rate of 0.62 would be appropriate in this case.
