HC Deb 09 November 1988 vol 140 cc198-200W
Mr. Hood

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will list each agricultural research establishment and give details of the type of research at each establishment.

Mr. Ryder

My own Department carries out research and development at a number of establishments within the agricultural development and advisory service (ADAS). The work which is relevant to the industries in England and Wales is concerned with practical aspects of farming and growing, including their interaction with the environment and their effect on animal welfare. A good deal of the programme is now concerned with the development of alternative crops and enterprises to meet emerging requirements. The main ADAS research establishments and experimental centres are shown in the list.

The Agricultural and Food Research Council has eight institutes, seven of which are concerned with agriculture. Details of these and the research that they carry out are given in the council's annual report, agricultural research is also carried out at commercial establishments and by universities and colleges.

Mr. Hood

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food when he last visited an agricultural research centre; and what matters he discussed.

Mr. Macgregor

I visited the Norfolk agricultural station at Morley on 28 October. Amongst matters discussed were diagnostic and advisory services for farmers and the funding of near market research.
