To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what assessment Her Majesty's Government have made of the number of additional nuclear power stations which will be required to have an impact on the greenhouse effect.

Man-made climate change (the greenhouse effect) is a complex subject involving many contributory factors and interrelationships. Carbon dioxide from biological and fossil fuel combustion sources is one such factor, but other trace gases in the atmosphere also contribute to the phenomenon.

There are still many uncertainties, but in the Government's view it will be necessary for the developed
