HL Deb 08 November 1988 vol 501 c614WA
Lord Chelwood

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the renationalisation of major industries that have been privatised would be consistent with the amended Treaty of Rome and which are the articles relelvent to such action.

The Secretary of State for Trade and industry (Lord Young of Graffham)

Renationalisation, of itself, would not involve a breach of the amended Treaty of Rome, just as privatisation does not. But the provisions of the amended treaty would need to be taken into account in working out the details of any scheme. I cannot answer further on the content of hypothetical Bills.
