HC Deb 08 November 1988 vol 140 c128W
55. Mr. Sumberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what proportion of places on school governing bodies in secondary schools in England and Wales reserved for parents have been filled; and what training is available to such governors.

Mrs. Rumbold

The information available so far from local authorities suggests that most schools are successfully filling the places on their governing bodies reserved for parents.

The provision of training for governors is the responsibility of local education authorities. The Government will be supporting nearly £5 million of local authority expenditure on governor training through education support grant in the financial year 1989–90. It is also sponsoring specific initiatives to provide training materials and information for governors.
