To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the expenditure in the science budget of the Natural Environment Research Council in 1986–87, 1987–88, and planned for 1988–89 in 1988–89 prices, other than on the British Antarctic Survey.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science when he last met the Natural Environment Research Council; and what matters were discussed.

My right hon. Friend last met members of the council when he visited the royal research vessel Challenger in the pool of London in May. A range of matters concerning the council's activities was discussed. I also refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave earlier today to the hon. Member for Orkney and Shetland (Mr. Wallace).
