Mr. Fry

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will give current figures for the number of unemployed persons aged between 50 and 59 years old inclusive;(a) in absolute figures and (b) as percentage of the total of that age group; and if he will break this figure down by length of unemployment of: (i) six to 12 months, (ii) 12 to 18 months, (iii) 18 to 24 months, (iv) 24 to 36 months, (v) 36 months to 48 months, (vi) 48 to 60 months, and (vii) over five years.

Mr. Lee

The table shows the number of unemployed claimants aged between 50 and 59 years inclusive, in the United Kingdom in July 1988, the latest available date, for the durations requested.

An unemployment rate expressed as a percentage of the work force aged 50 to 59 inclusive is not readily available, but I will write to the hon. Member as soon as possible with the information. The latest published unemployment rates for July 1988 for the closest age groups were 6.9 per cent. of the work force among those aged 45 to 54 inclusive, and 11.7 per cent. among those aged 55 to 59.
