Mr. Bermingham

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what was(a) the sentenced and (b) the remand population for all prisons in England and Wales and for the latest date available;

(2) how many females are currently being held in prison establishments under sentence in England and Wales.

The information is given in the following table. On the same date, 1,742 males and 50 females, most of whom were likely to be remand prisoners, were held in police cells.
