Notes:

(1) DOE housing regions are similar to standard regions except that: the northern region excludes Cumbria, which is included in the north-west; Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex are included in the eastern region (which is otherwise the same as East Anglia); and Greater London is a separate region.

(2) Expenditure figures represent Exchequer contributions paid to local authorities towards the cost of loan charges on borrowing (normally over a 20-year period) undertaken to provide capital grants to the private sector. The expenditure included is: home improvement grants; homes insulation scheme grants; housing defects reinstatement grants; slum clearance subsidy; and expenditure on environmental works in housing action areas and general improvement areas.

(3) Per capita figures are based on the Registrar General's estimates of resident population as at 30 June in each year.
