HC Deb 07 November 1988 vol 140 c7W
Mr. Michael Brown

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make it his policy to call on the European Commission aid organisations to devote more staff and resources to environmentally sustainable projects.

Mr. Chris Patten

At the recent opening of negotiations for a successor to the present Lome convention the Community made clear the importance it attached to the protection of the environment and reaffirmed its willingness to step up co-operation with its African, Caribbean and Pacific partners in this field.

The Government are concerned that the European Commission, which manages Community aid, should make the best use of its resources to cover environmental concerns; currently the Overseas Development Administration is financing a foresty expert to work with the Commission's own staff.
