To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the location of staff, number of offices and expenditure by the British Council in the Caribbean.

Mr. Eggar

The British Council has no offices in the Caribbean. In 1988–89 a total of £31,500 has been allocated for academic exchange and arts events. The council also administers £3 million on behalf of others (mainly ODA); manages a World Bank-funded technical assistance programme worth £126 million in Barbados and administers a privately-funded fellowship training programme worth £257,000 in Guyana.
