HC Deb 04 November 1988 vol 139 c808W
Mr. Norman Hogg

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security (1) if he will give figures showing the proportion of council tenants in England and Wales which receive housing benefit, and the proportion of these which are in receipt of supplementary benefit and have their rents paid in full;

(2) if he will give figures showing the proportion of council tenants in Scotland which receive housing benefit, and the proportion of these which are in receipt of supplementary benefit and have their rents paid in full.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

The information available is given in the table.

Council house tenants receiving assistance through the housing benefit scheme: 1987
England and Wales Per cent. Scotland Per cent.
A. Proportion of Council tenants receiving housing benefit 64 62
B. Proportion in A above receiving supplementary benefit 57 48

Note: Though supplementary benefit provided a passport to housing benefit some tenants would not receive full rent rebates because of deductions where non dependants were present in the household.

Source: The information for England and Wales is derived from the publication "Housing Rent Statistics at April 1987" produced by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and for Scotland from the "Scottish Development Department Statistical Bulletin" (HSU No. 1) and local authority housing benefit subsidy estimates for 1987–88.
