Mr. Stanley

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will list the planned construction dates of all sections of motorway in England that are in his Department's forward programme where construction has not yet commenced.

Motorway schemes which have yet to start construction are as follows:

Planned start of construction in 1988–89

  • M20 Maidstone-Ashford (It is hoped to let the first contract by the end of 1988).

Planned Start of Construction in 1989–90

  • M3 Compton-Basset widening
  • M40 Waterstock-Wendlebury
  • M40 Widening between junctions 4 and 5
  • M1 Widening between junctions 23a and 24 (part of Castle Donington North scheme)

Planned start of construction in 1990–91

  • M1 Climbing lane at junction 9
  • M5 Widening between junctions 6 and 8
  • M62 Widening between junctions 12 and 18

Planned start of construction from 1991 onwards

  • M1 Junction 34 Meadowhall/Tinsley roundabout improvement1
  • M2 Widening between junctions 1 and 3
