HC Deb 03 November 1988 vol 139 cc767-8W
Mr. Marlow

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport at what times of the day for each day of the week each direction of the M1 is free flowing without delays caused by traffic volumes between junctions 4 and 16.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The Department does not collect the information requested for every section of the M1 between junctions 4 and 16. The traffic flow information we have does indicate that there are likely to be problems with congestion for northbound traffic during Friday afternoon and evening and for the southbound traffic on Sunday evening and Monday morning. Delays are also experienced when incidents such as vehicle breakdowns and accidents occur.

Mr. Marlow

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what was the cause of the delays on the M1 in the vicinity of junction 15 southbound at 1600 hours on Sunday 30 October.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

A road traffic accident occurred at about 15.20 hours in which a single vehicle struck the central reserve safety fencing before coming to a halt in the offside lane of the southbound carriageway of M1 6km to the south of junction 15. Police officers attending the scene of the accident closed the offside lane for a period of approximately 20 minutes.
