To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people were held in custody on remand on 30 September.

On 30 September 1988 there were about 9,900 untried and convicted unsentenced prisoners in prison service establishments in England and Wales. A further 1,792 prisoners, most of whom would have been on remand, were held in police cells.
