To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many new trees have been planted under the special programme announced in the aftermath of the October 1987 hurricane; and how much of the budgeted allocation has been spent.

Mr. Ridley

Last winter an estimated half million amenity trees were planted under the task force trees programme and grants totalling £3 million were taken up. Assistance was also forthcoming from English Heritage, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Forestry Commission.
