HC Deb 02 November 1988 vol 139 cc658-9W
Mr. Menzies Campbell

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what provision is made for teaching first aid to schoolteachers who have the responsibility for supervising schoolchildren engaged in sporting activities as part of the school curriculum;

(2) what arrangements he has made for the recording of accidents to schoolchildren while engaged in sporting activities as part of the school curriculum;

(3) what was the number of accidents occurring to schoolchildren while engaged in sporting activities as part of the school curriculum for the last five years for which information is available.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

All physical education students undertake a course in sports medicine which is largely training in first aid. The majority of training courses for primary teachers also include instruction in first aid. It is the responsibility of education authorities to ensure that teachers continue to be adequately trained and to consider how best to record accidents to schoolchildren engaged in sporting activities as part of the school curriculum. I regret that information on the number of such accidents is not held centrally.
