HC Deb 02 November 1988 vol 139 c663W
Mr. Amess

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what further proposals he has to deal with the unemployment among young people in the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nicholls

[holding answer Monday 31 October]: The economic growth flowing from the Government's economic policies has had a dramatic impact on youth unemployment. Unemployment amongst the under-25s has fallen by 37 per cent. in the last two years and is now at its lowest level for more than five years. All unemployed people under 18 have the guarantee of an offer of a YTS place. In addition, those people aged 18 to 24 who have been out of work for six to 12 months have a guarantee of an offer of help back into work. These measures provide the most comprehensive support ever available for unemployed young people in this country.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what further proposals he has to deal with unemployment in the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Nicholls

[holding answer Monday 31 October]: We will continue to give priority to the sound economic policies which have encouraged economic growth and reduced unemployment by 934,000 since July 1986. On 5 September, employment training was launched to provide long-term unemployed people with the skills training they need to compete effectively for the many job vacancies which exist across the country.
