HC Deb 02 November 1988 vol 139 cc679-80W
35. Mr. Patrick Thompson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what further representations he has received on his green belt policy.

Mr. Chope

We continue to receive frequent representations on various aspects of green belt policy, to which we remain firmly committed.

67. Mr. Batiste

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what criteria he uses for judging whether to add land to the green belt.

Mr. Chope

Guidance on the designation of green belts and the alteration of their boundaries is given in planning policy guidance note 2. This states that established green belt boundaries should be altered only in exceptional circumstances and that, if an alteration is proposed to the general extent of a green belt approved in a structure plan, the Secretary of State will wish to be satisfied that the opportunities for development within the urban areas contained by and beyond the green belt have been carefully considered.
