HC Deb 02 November 1988 vol 139 c697W
Mr. Greg Knight

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster when the Greek language radio station currently operating unlawfully in London was last prosecuted; and what further proceedings are planned or pending.

Mr. Forth

There are currently three unlicensed broadcasters operating in London and transmitting in the Greek language. They have been raided on 56 occasions so far this year.

The last occasion that individuals or companies associated with the stations were convicted was on 4 July 1988 when fines of £13,900 were imposed and costs of £11,194 awarded to the Department. Unlicensed broadcasters cause interference to authorised radio services and whilst there are no proceedings currently pending, all three stations are under continued investigation by the radio investigation service. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to catch individuals: transmitter sites are usually unmanned.
