To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the level of council house rent arears in England at the latest date for which figures are available.

As my hon. Friend the then Minister for Housing and Planning, the Member for Bristol, West (Mr. Waldegrave) announced on 20 January, rent arrears owing to all English local authorities amounted to almost £196 million at 1 April 1987, the latest date for which information is at present available.
