To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the total of public expenditure in 1987.

[holding answer 24 May 1988]: Information on public expenditure is generally recorded on a financial year basis and the latest estimate of outturn for the public expenditure planning total for 1987–88 is £146 billion, as published in table 5.1 of the Financial Statement and Budget Report 1988–89.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish in theOfficial Report an analysis of the extent of charges by main public expenditure programme for the years 1979–80 to 1990–91, in a form consistent with the written answer of 30 March 1982, Official Report, columns 97–98, and with table 2.1 of Cm. 288-I.
