Mr. John Marshall

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the breakdown of the United Kingdom's net overseas investment since 1979 between the following geographical areas(a) The United States of America, (b) Japan, (c) Canada, (d) Australasia, (e) South America, (f) south-east Asia, (g) other EEC countries, (h) other European countries and (i) the rest of the world.

Comprehensive information on the geographical distribution of overseas assets is not available. Data on direct investment relating to the end of 1984 may be found inBritish Business of 22 May 1987. Estimates of direct investment flows overseas to end of 1986 were published in British Business of 11 March 1988. The latest issue of the Bank of England Quarterly Bulletin contains information on the United Kingdom monetary sector's assets overseas as at the end of 1987.
