HC Deb 27 May 1988 vol 134 c377W
Mr. Fraser

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for a report from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis as to how many police officers were involved in a raid on Brownies health club in Streatham, London, SW16 on 5–6 May; what degree of force was used during the raid; whether policemen involved wore rubber gloves; and what was the cost of the operation.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

I understand from the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that 41 police officers and five supporting civilian staff were involved in the operation, which was largely completed during a normal police shift. The cost of overtime, the only additional cost, amounted to about £100.

As to the use of force, the Commissioner tells me that no injuries were sustained during the operation either by his officers or by members of the public and that the only physical damage was to a lock at the entrance of the club. One of the civilian staff and four of the police officers are known to have worn protective gloves. The other officers were issued with disposable gloves for use if necessary, but no records were kept of actual use.
