§ Mr. Gareth WardellTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish in theOfficial Report for each health authority in Wales the number of persons suffering from AIDS; and if he will disaggregate the statistics by age and sex.
§ Mr. GristAt the end of April 1988, 21 cases of AIDS in Wales had been reported to the communicable disease surveillance centre, of whom 15 had died.
Information on the number of AIDS cases is disaggregated by sex on a United Kingdom basis only. For reasons of medical confidentiality, the figures for Wales are not disaggregated by health authority, age of sex.
§ Mr. Gareth WardellTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is his Department's latest estimate of the number of people in Wales that are currently HIV positive.
§ Mr. GristAt 31 March 1988, the number of known HIV antibody positive people in Wales was 102.
There are a number of unknown factors here and at present it is not possible to make an estimate of the number of people who are HIV antibody positive. However, a group of experts under the chairmanship of Sir David Cox is now considering forecasts for the numbers of people infected with HIV and with AIDS over a two-to-five-year period.
