HC Deb 27 May 1988 vol 134 cc399-400W
Mr. Gareth Wardell

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will publish in theOfficial Report for each health authority in Wales the number of persons suffering from AIDS; and if he will disaggregate the statistics by age and sex.

Mr. Grist

At the end of April 1988, 21 cases of AIDS in Wales had been reported to the communicable disease surveillance centre, of whom 15 had died.

Information on the number of AIDS cases is disaggregated by sex on a United Kingdom basis only. For reasons of medical confidentiality, the figures for Wales are not disaggregated by health authority, age of sex.

Mr. Gareth Wardell

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is his Department's latest estimate of the number of people in Wales that are currently HIV positive.

Mr. Grist

At 31 March 1988, the number of known HIV antibody positive people in Wales was 102.

There are a number of unknown factors here and at present it is not possible to make an estimate of the number of people who are HIV antibody positive. However, a group of experts under the chairmanship of Sir David Cox is now considering forecasts for the numbers of people infected with HIV and with AIDS over a two-to-five-year period.

Mr. Gareth Wardell

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many babies born in Wales were HIV positive at birth.

Mr. Grist

To the end of March 1988, the communicable disease surveillance centre had received no reports of HIV positive babies born in Wales.

Mr. Gareth Wardell

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many babies have been born in Wales to mothers who are HIV positive.

Mr. Grist

This information is not known since pregnant women and babies are not routinely tested for HIV antibodies.

Mr. Gareth Wardell

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many terminations of pregnancy in Wales have been carried out because the mother is HIV positive.

Mr. Grist

None of the notifications of termination of pregnancy carried out in Wales for the period 1 January 1983 to 30 September 1987 included a mention of either HIV positive condition or AIDS (ICD code 279.1). The information in respect of 1987 is provisional.
