HC Deb 26 May 1988 vol 134 c322W
Mr. Foulkes

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is the latest cost estimate for the Tucano trainer project; what were the original estimates; when the trainers are expected to be in operation; what was the original estimate; what financial and operational contingency plans have been made; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Sainsbury

The estimated cost for the Tucano trainer project has not changed since the contract was let. Aircraft were ordered on a firm price basis, with payment to be made on delivery. Consequently, there is no increase in the contract price as a result of delays in the programme. The value of the contract is, however, commercially confidential. We expect deliveries of Tucano to the RAF to commence shortly. Deliveries were initially scheduled to begin in January 1987. As a result of the delay, the RAF's Jet Provost fleet is continuing in service for longer than originally planned.
