HC Deb 26 May 1988 vol 134 c268W
Sir Bernard Braine

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what progress is being made in improving the surveillance of new-born babies in respect of possible eye defects; when the expected recommendations from the professional bodies are likely to be made; and when appropriate action can be expected.

Mrs. Currie

The third report from the maternity services advisory committee recommended that all babies should be fully examined within 24 hours of birth by a doctor experienced in the care of the newborn. The content of the examination is a matter for the clinician.

I understand the joint working party on child health surveillance convened by the British Paediatric Association will be presenting its report later this year.

We shall consider its report carefully.
