§ Sir Bernard BraineTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what progress is being made in improving the surveillance of new-born babies in respect of possible eye defects; when the expected recommendations from the professional bodies are likely to be made; and when appropriate action can be expected.
§ Mrs. CurrieThe third report from the maternity services advisory committee recommended that all babies should be fully examined within 24 hours of birth by a doctor experienced in the care of the newborn. The content of the examination is a matter for the clinician.
I understand the joint working party on child health surveillance convened by the British Paediatric Association will be presenting its report later this year.
We shall consider its report carefully.
