HC Deb 26 May 1988 vol 134 cc233-4W
Mr. John Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what proposals his Department has to increase the role of multinational companies in fostering economic development in the Third world.

Mr. Chris Patten

The bilateral and multilateral aid programmes provide substantial opportunities for British-based multinational companies to assist with approved projects in the Third world. Now that the aid programme is growing in real terms the scope for such assistance will increase. Through our support for structural adjustment we are also seeking to promote a better policy environment within developing countries, and one that is more conducive to direct foreign investment. The Commonwealth Development Corporation often invests in projects overseas in partnership with British private investors.
