§ Mr. JohnTo ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many civil servants in his Department are also directors or consultants in(a) public liability companies, (b) companies limited by guarantee, (c) building societies, (d) other friendly societies and (e) commercial undertakings other than the above; and what rules or instructions govern these activities with particular reference to remuneration.
§ Mr. Peter Walker[holding answer 23 May 1988]: The information is not available. The involvement of Welsh Office staff in outside occupations is covered by several staff rules, including one which requires that without permission no officer may hold a directorship or engage in consulting work which has a connection with official duties or is on behalf of a firm or concern which is in contractual or other special relationship with the Department. There is no requirement to obtain consent where the activity does not impinge on the Welsh Office.
