HC Deb 26 May 1988 vol 134 cc328-9W
25. Mr. McCusker

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will list the achievements of the Anglo-Irish Agreement.

Mr. Tom King

The agreement has offered reassurance to members of both traditions that their rights and identities will be respected; it has opened the way to intensified cross-border co-operation on a wide range of matters, and in particular in the security field offers the opportunity for fundamentally improved links between the security forces; and it has permitted Anglo-Irish relations to be conducted on a closer and more informal basis and provides a more immediate forum for the discussion of problems that arise either between north and south or between the two traditions.
