HC Deb 25 May 1988 vol 134 cc200-1W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will give the number of local education authority areas in which there is a physiotherapy service available in schools, including special schools, to answer the needs of handicapped pupils.

Mr. Grist

The information requested is not collected centrally.

Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what steps are being taken to ensure that all the technical, polytechnical and further education colleges in Wales are fully accessible for students in wheelchairs.

Mr. Grist

It is the responsibility of education authorities and others providing educational buildings to make provision for disabled students. For new buildings, education authorities must observe the minimum requirements of the Department of Education and Science design note No. 18 (1984) "Access for disabled people to Educational Buildings" which cover the question of wheelchair access.

Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many handicapped pupils were registered in January 1987 with local education authorities in Wales as having a need for special education and have that need satisfied at special schools outside Wales.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

In January 1987 local authorities in Wales recorded 13,163 pupils for whom they were or will be maintaining a statement of special educational needs. Information is not available on the number of statemented pupils receiving special education at special schools outside Wales, but in January 1987 a total of 458 statemented pupils were receiving special education in a Welsh or English local authority other than their own.
