HC Deb 25 May 1988 vol 134 cc211-2W
Ms. Ruddock

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list for each of the last three years for which figures are available(a) the total number of patients detained under section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983, (b) the number of such patients treated with electroconvulsive therapy and (c) the number of such cases where emergency powers were used to permit treatment with electro-convulsive therapy.

Mrs. Currie

The total number of admissions of patients detained under section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983 is as follows:

Mental illness and mental handicap hospitals and units, and Special Hospitals, England
1984 1985 1986
Number of admissions under s.2 Mental Health Act 1983 6,855 7,758 8,260

Figures relate to admissions and not individual patients since an individual may be admitted more than once during the year.

Details relating to the number of patients detained under section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983 who are treated with electro-convulsive therapy, and the number of such cases where emergency powers were used to permit treatment with electro-convulsive therapy, are not collected centrally.

Ms. Ruddock

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what regulations are currently in force regarding the treatment of patients detained under section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983.

Mrs. Currie

Regulations governing the use of treatment for mental disorder for all patients detained under the powers of the Mental Health Act 1983 are contained in part IV of the Act and also in Statutory Instrument 1983, No. 893 (The Mental Health (Hospital, Guardianship and Consent to Treatment) Regulations 1983).
