HC Deb 24 May 1988 vol 134 cc118-9W
Mr. Hunter

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) if he will make representations to the Government of Lesotho stressing the historical importance and significance of St. John's church Maseru, and the war memorial which it contains; and if he will seek assurances that the church will not be demolished;

(2) if he will seek clarification from the High Commissioner in Lesotho about reported proposals that the historic British church of St. John, Maseru, and the war memorial which it contains, are to be demolished; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Chalker

This is a matter for the Anglican Church in Lesotho. I understand that the diocesan and church councillors are considering ways of developing the site, but that they are concerned to preserve the church and its war memorial.
