[holding answer 16 May 1988]: The numbers of persons accepted as homeless during 1979 and 1987 were 12,698 and 13,345 respectively.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many people were classified as homeless in 1979; and what is the most recent figure, excluding the area covered in the valleys initiative.

[holding answer 20 May 19881]: The number of persons accepted as homeless in districts other than those which are in the valleys initiative area, during 1979 and 1987 were 8,755 and 9,817 respectively. The valley initiative programme launched during 1986 includes the following districts: Blaenau Gwent, Merthyr Tydfil, Cynon Valley, Rhondda, Ogwr, Lliw Valley, Torfaen and Islwyn.
