HC Deb 23 May 1988 vol 134 c45W
Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales (1) what estimates he has of the numbers of people to have developed acute myeloid leukaemia in the counties of Gwynedd and Clwyd as a likely consequence of the effects of the Windscale fire of 1957; and if he will make a statement:

(2) what work has been carried out to ascertain the effects on the health of the population of north Wales of the Windscale fire of 1957; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Grist

I am advised that the level of radioactivity in Gwynedd and Clwyd as a result of the 1957 Windscale fire would have been too low to have had any detectable effect on the incidence of myeloid leukaemia in those counties. For this reason no epidemiological studies of the effects of the fire on the health of the population of north Wales have been carried out.
