HC Deb 23 May 1988 vol 134 c56W
Mr. David Porter

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what recent representations he has received on noise emissions from motor cycles; and whether he expects to bring forward any further controls;

(2) what recent representations he has received on noise nuisance from motor cycle engines; and whether he has any plans to seek to amend the legislation on pollution as a consequence.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

The Department regularly receives letters about motor cycle noise. Some complain about the nuisance it causes. Few complain that the regulations we propose to introduce will be too stringent.

We are currently consulting interested parties on draft regulations made under the Motor Cycle Noise Act. These will control the quality of replacement silencers and exhaust systems for motor cycles when they are offered for sale.

We are also preparing regulations to implement the stricter noise limits for motor cycles contained in Community directive 87/56/EEC.
