Mr. Illsley

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment (1) whether he is able to publish the proposed regulations which will replace the Mines and Quarries Act 1954;

(2) whether he is able to publish, in conjunction with the Health and Safety Commission, the codes of practice which are to replace the Mines and Quarries Act 1954.

Mr. Nicholls

Fifteen sets of regulations, each with a supporting approved code of practice, will replace the Mines and Quarries Act 1954 and associated legislation. Five sets of proposed regulations together with the relevant proposed codes of practice have already been published. The subjects to be covered in the programme are:

  • *Electricity in Quarries
  • Explosives in Coal Mines
  • Explosives in Miscellaneous Mines
  • *Explosives in Quarries
  • Health and Welfare Machinery
  • *Mines (Safety of Exit)
  • Respirable Dust
  • *Shafts and Winding Special Hazards Support
  • Tips and Structures Transport
  • Ventilation and Firedamp Drainage
  • *Subjects on which proposals have been published.
