HC Deb 23 May 1988 vol 134 c10W
Mr. Cartwright

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what consultations he has undertaken about the future of the Horniman museum after the proposed abolition of the Inner London education authority; and when he now expects to be able to announce firm proposals.

Mr. Dunn

My right hon. Friend has concluded that, after April 1990, both the Horniman and Geffrye museums should be established as independent charitable trusts. To ensure the future of the two museums he proposes that, in addition to support they are able to raise from local authorities and the private sector, they should receive a grant, in the first instance, from the London Residuary Body, and in the longer-term from the museums and Galleries Commission. We now propose to discuss the details of these proposed arrangements with the museums, with ILEA and with the local authorities whose residents enjoy the services of the two museums.
