HC Deb 23 May 1988 vol 134 c78W
Ms. Walley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what advice he has issued to ensure that all ministerial cars run on lead-free petrol; and if he will list all ministerial and departmental cars, indicating which of those actually use lead-free petrol.

Mr. Chope

It is Government policy to replace all ministerial cars with vehicles capable of running on unleaded petrol as they fall due for replacement. There are currently 21 ministerial cars running exclusively on unleaded fuel, three of which are allocated to the Department of the Environment.

The Crown Suppliers (a trading fund of the Department of the Environment) operates approximately 4,400 vehicles which are hired to Government Departments and public sector organisations. Of these some 2,250 can either run now or can be adapted to run on lead free petrol where this is available.
