HC Deb 23 May 1988 vol 134 cc39-40W
Mr. Livingstone

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list and explain the basis on which educational institutions in the United Kingdom and abroad have been in receipt of funding from his Department from 1979 to the current date.

Mr. Sainsbury

The MOD directly funds six defence lectureships at British universities and makes use of university and other higher educational facilities and courses to meet educational and training requirements. The majority of Ministry of Defence expenditure with educational institutions in the United Kingdom is, however, through research agreements and contracts placed on behalf of the defence research establishments. In addition, grants for work of relevance to defence are made under collaborative arrangements with the research councils, and the MOD and the Science and Engineering Research Council co-fund awards to certain students who are jointly supervised by their university and defence research establishments. Involvement with educational institutions overseas is minimal. All activities are in support of the defence programme.
