HC Deb 20 May 1988 vol 133 cc588-9W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Prime Minister (1) what co-ordination takes place between all those Government Departments which operate in Wales concerning their use of the Welsh language when dealing with the public;

(2) what guidelines exist concerning the use of the Welsh language when dealing with the public by those Government Departments which have responsibility for aspects of the Government's work in Wales.

The Prime Minister

It is for each Department to decide how it responds to correspondence and deals with the public. Departments with offices in Wales seek to ensure that suitable arrangements exist so that letters written in Welsh are replied to in Welsh.

Mr. Wigley

To ask the Prime Minister what is her policy with regard to dealing with individuals and bodies in Wales who wish to communicate with those offices for which she has direct ministerial responsibility through the medium of the Welsh language.

The Prime Minister

To refer the communication to the Welsh Office.
