HC Deb 20 May 1988 vol 133 c584W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Attorney-General what is his policy with regard to dealing with individuals and bodies in Wales who wish to communicate with the Law Officers' Departments through the medium of the Welsh language.

The Attorney-General

It is the policy of the Lord Chancellor's Department to facilitate communication through the medium of the Welsh language, so far as is reasonably possible, and to that end Courts and offices for which the Lord Chancellor is responsible and which do not have access to a Welsh speaker are able to take advantage of an arrangement with the Welsh Office to provide a translation service.

My own Department has no facilities for translating communications received in Welsh, and in those circumstances my officials would seek advice from the Welsh Office.
